Helping Others Help You: How Women Athletes Can Solicit the Help They Need

Mental health is just as important as physical health, but it can be difficult to talk about, especially for women athletes. There are a number of reasons why this might be the case. For one, female athletes are often expected to be tough and resilient, and showing any sign of weakness can be seen as a sign of failure. Additionally, female athletes may worry that they will be judged or ridiculed if they open up about their mental health struggles.

However, it is important for female athletes to remember that they are not alone. Many other female athletes have struggled with mental health issues, and there are people who can help. If you are struggling with your mental health, here are a few tips on how to talk with others about how they can help you:

1. Find someone you trust.

The first step is to find someone you trust, such as a friend, family member, therapist, or coach. This person should be someone who is supportive and non-judgmental, and who you feel comfortable talking to about your feelings.

2. Be honest about your struggles.

Once you have found someone you trust, be honest about your struggles. Let them know what you are going through and how it is affecting your life. It is important to be as specific as possible so that the person can understand what you are experiencing.  Don’t hold back.

3. Ask for what you need.

Once you have explained your struggles, ask for what you need from the person. This might include things like listening to you, offering support, or helping you to find resources. It is important to be clear about what you need so that the person can help you in the best way possible.

4. Be patient.

It is important to be patient when communicating with others about your mental health. It may take some time for them to understand what you are going through and how to help you. Be persistent and keep talking about your struggles until you feel like you are getting the support you need.  Also consider approaching someone else if you feel that your first choice is not understanding your needs.

5. Take care of yourself.

In addition to talking to others about your mental health, it is important to take care of yourself. This includes things like eating healthy, getting enough sleep, and exercising regularly. Taking care of yourself will help you to feel better both physically and mentally.  You need to put you first and be honest about what you, your body, and your mind need.

Remember, you are not alone. Many other female athletes have struggled with mental health issues, and there are people who can help. If you are struggling, reach out for help. Talking to someone about what you are going through is the first step to getting better.
